ABSTRACT

This research aimed to evaluate the biological aspects and the feeding behavior of Aphis gossypii in watermelon cultivars submitted to silicon application. The experiment was conducted at the Institute of Education, Agriculture and Environment of the Federal University of Amazonas, Humaitá, Brazil. The experimental design was completely randomized in a 2×3 factorial (with and without silicon; cultivars Crimson Sweet, Fairfax and Charleston), with ten replications. The application of silicic acid (1%) was carried out directly on the substrate using dose equivalent to 1 ton SiO2·ha-1, 25 days after sowing. The rearing of aphids was kept in cucumber plants, cultivar Caipira. Insect biology tests were conducted to evaluate the duration of the prereproductive, reproductive and postreproductive periods, longevity, number of nymphs, and feeding behavior using the honeydew secretion technique. Analysis of variance was performed using the statistical program SISVAR and the means were compared by the F and ScottKnott test (p ≤ 0.05). The silicon application to watermelon plants affects the reproduction and feeding of A. gossypii. The watermelon plants cultivar Crimson Sweet treated with silicon has high resistance to feeding by A. gossypii.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Aim: To determine total fluoride (TF) concentration in Na2FPO3/Ca-based toothpastes, using fluoride ion selective electrode (F-ISE) by the direct technique, it is necessary to use acid (Ac+) to hydrolyze the FPO32- ion and to dissolve insoluble fluoride salts bound to the abrasive. For NaF/silica-based toothpastes, the use of acid is not necessary (Ac-) and a simplified protocol could be followed. Methods: Thus, we evaluated TF concentration in seven brands of NaF/silica-based toothpastes, following the validated conventional Cury's protocol (Ac+) or a simplification of this protocol (Ac-).Fluoride was analyzed with ISE calibrated with fluoride standard solutions prepared in the same conditions as the samples (Ac+ or Ac-). Results: The mean (±SD; n=21) of TF concentrations (µg F/g) found by Ac+ (971.3±191.2) and Ac- (982.4±201.3) protocols were not statistically different (t test, p=0.22). The TF concentrations found agree with those declared by the manufacturers, except for one toothpaste imported from China. Conclusion: The findings suggest that the determination of fluoride in NaF/silica-based toothpastes can be accurately made using a simplified protocol of analysis

ABSTRACT

Abstract Silicon is the second most abundant element on Earth, and the third most abundant trace element in human body. It is present in water, plant and animal sources. On the skin, it is suggested that silicon is important for optimal collagen synthesis and activation of hydroxylating enzymes, improving skin strength and elasticity. Regarding hair benefits, it was suggested that a higher silicon content in the hair results in a lower rate of hair loss and increased brightness. For these beneficial effects, there is growing interest in scientific studies evaluating the efficacy and safety of using dietary supplements containing silicon. Its use aims at increasing blood levels of this element and improving the skin and its annexes appearance. There are different forms of silicon supplements available and the most important consideration to be made in order to select the best option is related to safety and bioavailability. Silicon supplements are widely used, though there is wide variation in silicon bioavailability, ranging from values below 1% up to values close to 50%, depending on the chemical form. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the scientific literature related to the different chemical forms of silicon supplements available and the limitations and recent progress in this field. According to reported studies, among the different chemical forms available, the orthosilicic acid (OSA) presents the higher bioavailability, whereas the others forms have absorption inversely proportional to the degree of polymerization. However, clinical studies evaluating safety and efficacy are still lacking.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of two grading zirconia techniques on the fatigue limit of 3-unit fixed dental prostheses (FDPs). Presintered blocks of 3YTZP (3 mol% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal) were milled to obtain sixty-nine 3-unit FDPs, which were divided into three groups (n = 23). The control group (CTL) was sintered and glazed following the usual parameters. In the two experimental groups presintered FDPs received silica/glass before sintering. Silica sol-gel group (SSG) was graded by the sol-gel processing route, while the glasszirconia-glass group (GZG) was graded by a slurry technique. Graded groups did not receive a glaze layer after sintering. All FDPs were then luted with a dual-curing resin cement on composite abutments, embedded in polyurethane and stored in water for five days. The initial load of the fatigue test was calculated based on the results of the monotonic testing applied on three specimens of each group. To determine the fatigue limit, 20 samples of each group were subjected to staircase testing (100,000 cycles/5 Hz). The fatigue limits (in Newtons) were CT = 1607.27, SSG = 1824.31, and GZG = 2006.57, and the Dixon and Mood test indicated statistically significant differences among groups (95% confidence interval). The infiltration of silica and glass on zirconia bulk, by two different grading methods, increased the fatigue limits of monolithic zirconia FDPs(AU)

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether the use of desensitizing dentifrices used 15 days prior to and after in-office tooth bleaching could eliminate or reduce tooth sensitivity. After institutional review board approval and informed consent, 45 subjects were selected and divided into 3 groups according to the dentifrice selected: Colgate Total (CT), Colgate Sensitive Pro-Relief (CS) or Sensodyne ProNamel (SP). The subjects used toothpaste and a toothbrush provided to them for 15 days prior to bleaching. They were then submitted to two in-office bleaching sessions (Whiteness HP Blue Calcium). Their tooth sensitivity was assessed using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) for a week after each session. Their tooth shade alteration was measured with a Vitapan Classical shade guide to determine if the dentifrices could influence the effectiveness of the bleaching agent. The data were submitted to Wilcoxon, Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests (α = 0.05). The use of desensitizing dentifrices did not affect the bleaching efficacy. In regard to tooth sensitivity, there was a statistically significant difference between the results of the Control Group and Group T2 after the first session (p = 0.048). There was no statistically significant difference in the results for the other groups after the first session. In regard to the second session, there was no statistically significant difference in the results for all the groups. The use of a desensitizing dentifrice containing nitrate potassium reduced tooth sensitivity during the bleaching regimen. Dentifrices containing arginine and calcium carbonate did not reduce tooth sensitivity. Color change was not influenced by the dentifrices used.

ABSTRACT

Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) was developed in early 1990s and has been successfully used for root perforation repair, root end filling, and one-visit apexification. MTA is composed mainly of tricalcium silicate and dicalcium silicate. When MTA is hydrated, calcium silicate hydrate (CSH) and calcium hydroxide is formed. Formed calcium hydroxide interacts with the phosphate ion in body fluid and form amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) which finally transforms into calcium deficient hydroxyapatite (CDHA). These mineral precipitate were reported to form the MTA-dentin interfacial layer which enhances the sealing ability of MTA. Clinically, the use of zinc oxide euginol (ZOE) based materials may retard the setting of MTA. Also, the use of acids or contact with excessive blood should be avoided before complete set of MTA, because these conditions could adversely affect the hydration reaction of MTA. Further studies on the chemical nature of MTA hydration reaction are needed.

ABSTRACT

Background: The tooth whitening substances for extrinsic use that are available in Brazil contain hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. Several studies have attributed the appearance of lesions in the enamel morphology, including hypersensitivity, to these substances. Such lesions justify fluoride therapy and application of infrared lasers, among other procedures. However, there is no consensus among researchers regarding the relevance of the severity of lesions detected on the tooth surface. Objectives: The present study was carried out with an aim of evaluating in vitro the effects of the hydrogen peroxide, carbamide peroxide and sodium bicarbonate contained in dentifrice formulations, on human tooth enamel. Materials and Methods: After darkening process in laboratory, human premolars were brushed using dentifrice containing the two whitening substances (Rembrandt - carbamide peroxide and Mentadent - hydrogen peroxide) and the abrasive product (Colgate - sodium bicarbonate). The degree of specimen staining before and after this procedure was determined using spectrophotometry. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to obtain images, which were analyzed to show the nature of the lesions that appeared on the enamel surface. Results: The effectiveness of the whitening caused by hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide and the abrasion caused by bicarbonate were confirmed, given that the treated test pieces returned to their original coloration. Based on SEM, evaluation of the enamel surfaces subjected to the test products showed that different types of morphologic lesions of varying severity appeared. Conclusions: Whitening dentifrice containing hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide produced lesions on the enamel surface such that the greatest sequelae were associated with exposure to hydrogen peroxide.

ABSTRACT

Our objective was to verify the effect of silicon on the intensity of brown eye spot and on the mineral nutrition of coffee seedlings. In the first experiment, 6 doses of silicic acid (0, 0.5, 1, 2, 4 and 6 g kg-1 soil) were tested using a complete randomized block design with 4 replicates with 6 coffee seedlings cultivar Catuaí Vermelho IAC 99 inoculated with the fungus Cercospora coffeicola. In the second experiment, X-ray microanalysis in a scanning electron microscope was performed on 2 coffee cultivars (Topazio MG1190 and Icatu Precoce IAC 3282), inoculated and non-inoculated with C. coffeicola, treated and untreated with calcium silicate (1 g kg-1 of soil). With the increase of the silicic acid doses, there was observed a reduction in the area under the disease progress curve of the number of lesions per leaf (AUPCNLL), coupled with a linear reduction in the foliar contents of magnesium and phosphorus as well as an increase in the contents of sulfur and copper. The foliar contents of boron presented a quadratic behavior, decreasing with the increase of silicic acid and increasing with the dose of 4 g kg-1 of soil. In X-ray microanalysis, coffee seedlings with brown eye spot presented lower peaks of potassium and calcium, regardless of the cultivar used.

ABSTRACT

The aphid Myzus persicae (Sulzer) is an important pest of potato and causes direct harm, due to the quantity of sap extracted and for being vector of important phytovirus. This work was carried out to evaluate the action of silicon as a resistance inducer of potato to M. persicae. Four treatments were tried: foliar fertilization with silicon acid at 1 percent; soil fertilization with 250 ml silicic acid solution at 1 percent; foliar fertilization with silicon acid at 1 percent + soil fertilization with 250 ml silicic acid solution at 1 percent; and a control. The treatments were applied thirty days after the explants emergence. Fifteen days after the application of the treatments, feeding preference and some biological aspects of the aphids were evaluated. After, the content of tannins and lignin present in the leaves and the activity of the enzymes peroxidase and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase were also determined. The silicon fertilization did not affect the preference of the aphids; however it reduced fecundity and the rate of population growth of the insects. The lignin percentage increased in the leaves of plants fertilized with silicon via soil and/or foliar and the percentage of tannins increased only in the leaves fertilized via soil plus foliar. The silicon acted as a resistance inducer to M. persicae in potato.

ABSTRACT

A new biocompatible apatite-wollastonite magnetic glass ceramic has been synthesized via sol-gel process. Characteristics of the materials were determined with differential thermal analysis (DTA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scan electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrum (EDS), inductively couple plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) and so on. Results showed that the main crystalline phases of the material were hydroxyapatite/fluoroapatite [Ca10(PO4)6(OH, F)), beta-wollastonite[beta-CaSiO3] and calcium europium oxide silicate Ca2Eu8[(SiO4)6O2]. The magnetization of the sample contanining 2% Eu2O3 in weight reached 2.18 emu/g for an applied field of 10 000Oe. Hydroxyapatite layer could form on the surface of the sample while soaking for 14 days in simulated body fluid. Good bioactivity was demonstrated. So it is a potential bone repairing material as well as a hyperthemia treatment material for pateints with cancer.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of silicon acid and acibenzolar-S-methyl (ASM) on biology and behavior of the aphid (greenbug) in wheat plants. The experiment involved a 4 factorial (no silicon, silicon on leaf, silicon in the soil and silicon in the soil + on leaf), x 2 (with and without acibenzolar-S-methyl), in a completely randomized design. A preference test with chance of choice was set in blocks randomized, with 10 replications. Silicon acid was used at 1 percent and ASM at 0.5 percent. The treatments were evaluated by means of preference tests with chance of choice (adult aphids in leaf sections of wheat plants were counted), biological studies (length of pre-reproductive, reproductive and post-reproductive periods, mortality rate during the pre-productive period, number of nymphs, longevity and population growth rate were determined) and colonization of aphids (number of adult aphids and nymphs were determined). In the preference test, plants that received ASM were not chosen by the aphids. The application of the silicon or ASM reduced significantly the number of nymphs, the population growth rate, the post-reproductive period and the longevity of the greenbug. A significant reduction of the number of aphids was observed during aphids colonization when ASM or silicon were applied. The addition of silicon acid, mostly in the soil, or of ASM is promising as a control method in the integrated management of aphid in wheat.

ABSTRACT

A novel glass-ceramic has been derived from sol-gel process. In this study XRD and FTIR analysis confirmed that the main crystalline phases of the material were hydroxyapatite/fluoroapatite [Ca10(PO4)6(OH,F)] and beta-wollastonite[beta-CaSiO3]; SEM examination showed that the microstructure contained many micro pores of 2-3 microm. After pore-forming, the material possessed good macro porous structure: the size of macro pores was 300-400 microm in diameter, and pores interconnected each other. Bioactivity of the material was preliminarily evaluated in the simulate body fluid. SEM observation revealed that a lot of apatite granules had been formed on the surface of the material after soaking within 7 days. Result shows that the novel sol-gel derived apatite-wollastonite-containing glass-ceramic has good bioactivity. Porous materials have suitable microstructure as well as macrostructure, which make it an excellent material to be used as bone-repairing materials and bone tissue engineering carrier materials.
